The setting of the novel is in a large pleasant meadow, Britwick, Earlshall Park, and Vicar (the last home for Black Beauty). The setting time is in 19^th century when the most popular transportation is used horse.

1. Black Beauty

Description : Black Beauty is stallion. He has one white foot, bright black coat and a pretty white star on its forehead. He is very obedient and loyal with his master. He has a good sensitive feeling.

2. Squire Gordon

Description : He is a good rider, a kind person, and thoughtful for his horse. He has married. He lives in Britwick.

3. John Manly

Description : He is coachman who is thoughtful with horse, gentle, and kind. He works for Squire Gordon to keep his horses. After Squire Gordon leaves, he works for Vicar.

4. Joe

Description : He is groom. He is careless but responsible. He works for Squire Gordon but after Squire Gordon leaves, he works for Vicar.

Summary

Black beauty was stallion. He was born in a large pleasant meadow, in that place he lived with his mother. When he was four years old, he started his breaking in. After that, He is bought by Squire Gordon so he lived in Britwirck. He got friends, they were Merryleg and Ginger. The coachman, John Manly was very thoughtful for horse so he really cared with Black Beauty. Someday, Mrs. Gordon was sick and needed a doctor. Black Beauty was woken by John to pick up a doctor for Mrs. Gordon. After they had gotten to find a doctor, Black Beauty got rest in his stable. Unfortunately, Joe, a stable boy didn’t cover him with a warm cloth so Black Beauty fell ill. John was very sad and Joe felt guilty.

Black Beauty was healthy but there was a problem. Mrs. Gordon was sick and wanted to live in a warm country for a few years. So, Black Beauty and Ginger were sold to Earlshall Park and gave Merryleg to the Vicar on condition that Marryleg was never to be sold. Joe and John were engaged in that house. In Earlshall Park, Black Beauty and Ginger had to wear the bearing rein. It was painful for them. Ginger became wild because that. Someday, Ruben Smith was riding Black Beauty on condition he was too drunk so didn’t ride care. Suddenly, Black beauty stumbled and fell down, Smith was thrown off and he died. After Black beauty recovered, He was sold and became a job-horse. The new master was very kind. Black Beauty was sold to Mr. Barry. Then, Mr. Barry sold him to Jeremiah Barker. Jeremiah Barker had to move to countryside so Black Beauty was sold to Jakes. Then, Jakes sold him to Nicholas Skinner.

Black Beauty got sick. The doctor who checked Black Beauty said that Black Beauty had to take a rest so he could be sold for affair price. At the sale, He was bought by Mr. Throughgood, a farmer. Finally, Black Beauty was bought by a young lady. The groom who picked him up was Joe. Black Beauty lived in Vicar. The young lady said that she didn’t want to sell Black Beauty to other people. It made him happy and it meant that his trouble was over. He could live happy forever.

What is the Major conflict in the story?

The Major conflict in the story is Black Beauty was sold to Earlshall Park. It was the beginning time for Black Beauty wore the bearing rein and the first time for Black Beauty to live unhappy.

How does the story end?

The story ends with happy ending. Black Beauty is bought by lady who is very kind. She promises not to sell Black Beauty to the other people and want to keep Black Beauty for along of his life. It means that Black Beauty doesn’t have a trouble again like his life before. Fortunately, Joe is a groom in the last home for Black Beauty, so he knows a lot of about how to keep Black Beauty. Joe is an old friend of Black Beauty when Black Beauty in Squire Gordon house. It makes Black Beauty happy.

What is the theme of the book?

The theme of the book is we must love animals, not just for pets but love them like our friends because animal is created by God so we must appreciate animal like human too.

Do you like the book?

No, I don’t like this book because it’s too difficult for me to understand about the story. I must read it for two times to understand about the story. It’s difficult because this novel is a fable which the main character is an animal and the words which are used in this novel difficult. There are many words which common to show about animal, especially about their gesture or sound.

This book was a little difficult.

Setting

The setting of the novel is in Treasure Island in the middle of eighteen century. The Story is begun in year 1756.

Major characters

1. Jim Hawkins

Description : He is a strong boy. His age is about twelve years old when he began to find the treasure. He is courageous and smart.

2. Dr. Livesey

Description : He is a very kind person. He is very care with the other and a patient person.

3. Captain Smollet

Description : He is a sailor and a very kind person. He is smart, courageous, and strong.

4. Squire Trelawney

Description : He is a kind and a rich person. He lives in a big white house on the hill outside the village. He is courageous and strong.

5. Ben Gunn

Description : He has long white hair and long beard. His cloth is torn and ragged. He wears a leather belt round his waist. He is very strong, not a desperate person, and also very kind.

6. Long John Silver

Description : He is a pirate, a murderer, and a thief. He is very cruel, selfish and greedy. His left leg is missing and he curries a crutch under his left arm but he can moves quickly and also run.

Summary

Jim Hawkins, Dr. Livesey, and Squire Trelawney went to Treasure Island to find the Captain Flint’s treasure by sailing ship. Hispaniola was the name of the ship and Captain Smollet was the captain of Hispaniola. They went with Long John Silver as the ship’s cook. Someday, Jim heard a conversation Silver and young sailor. Jim knew that Silver was a pirate who wanted the treasure. Then, Jim told to Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney and, Captain Smollet about something that he had heard.

In Treasure Island, Jim met Ben Gunn. Ben Gunn told that Flint’s men marooned him and now he wanted to go home. Suddenly, Jim heard the voice of cannon which was firing. Then, Jim ran toward the Stockade. Ben Gunn said that Jim’s Friends were at there. At Stockade, Jim met Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney and, Captain Smollet and he told all about Ben Gunn. When they was sleeping, Silver came. They fought with Silver and they won the fighting so Silver ran. At night, Jim went out to find Ben Gunn’s boat without told with anyone. Jim went to Hispaniola to move the ship toward north of Treasure Island. Jim succeeded and he came back to stockade. Unfortunately, Silver was the owner of stockade now. Then, Jim followed Silver to find the treasure before that, Jim met Dr. Livesey and told about his plan. Besides, Dr. Livesey told that Ben Gunn was with him.

Jim, Silver, and the other pirates went to find the treasure. Then, they found the treasure’s place. The pirates dug up the soil but they couldn’t find anything so they were mad. They wanted to kill Jim and Silver. Fortunately, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and Captain Smollet helped them and pirates ran away. Dr. Livesey told that Ben Gunn had found the treasure. They left the Treasure Island and they anchored the ship when they reached land. When they returned to the ship, they didn’t meet Silver. Silver went with boat and three thousand pounds. After that, they continued voyage. Finally, they were a rich people now. They lived happy.

The Major conflict in the story is about the struggle to find the treasure.

How does the story end?

The story ends with happy ending. Jim Hawkins, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and Captain Smollet get the treasure. Long John Silver doesn’t find the Treasure because Ben Gunn had found it before them and the pirates were very mad so want to kill Silver. Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and Captain Smollet help him. Then, they come back to England. Long John Silver steals three thousand pounds of the treasure in the voyage. Jim Hawkins, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and Captain Smollet share the Treasure in England. Each of them has some money. They become wealthy.

What is the theme of the book?

The theme of the book is we must courageous and don’t feel desperate when faces the challenge.

Do you like the book?

Yes, I like this book because I’m very interested about the story which tells about the adventure to find the Captain Flint’s treasure. I can imagine how great the adventure. The story is very interesting because tells about the struggle to reach the Treasure Island which has many challenges. This book is very appropriate to read for everyone.

This book was easy to read.

Narrative====> PETRUK AND KALIMASADA AMULET

Long time ago, there was a kingdom which named Amarta. Amarta was a big and peaceful kingdom. All people lived happily in Amarta. One of them was Petruk who was a very kind person. He lived in Amarta as a Punakawan. Punakawan was a person who lived in a kingdom as an adviser for a king.

Someday, there was a big problem in Amarta. Kalimasada Amulet was missing so all people were very confused. Petruk knew the person who stole the Amulet. He was Mustakaweni, and then Petruk told it to his lord, Bambang Irawan and Bambang Priyambodo. Kalimasada Amulet was really important for them. All people knew if the Amulet was lost, it would be a big disaster which happened. Therefore, Petruk helped Bambang Irawan and Bambang Priyambodo to get the Amulet from Mustakaweni. They were successful and got the Amulet again. Petruk was believed to keep the Amulet.

Actually, there was a person who wanted to get the Amulet from Petruk. He was Adipati Karna. When he met Petruk, he stabbed Petruk until died by Kris Kyai Jalak. Gandarwa knew about it and he made Petruk alive again. After that, he changed himself to be Duryudana. He helped Petruk to get the Amulet from Adipati Karna and he was successful. He told Petruk to put the Amulet on his head because it would make him stronger. Peruk did what Gandarwa said.

Petruk became a very strong person. He could defeat many people. Therefore, he became a king in Ngrancang Kencana Kingdom whose name Prabu Wel Keduwelbeh. He also changed himself. When Petruk wanted to be crowned, there was a problem. Dwarawati Kingdom didn’t want Prabu Wel Keduwelbeh to be a king because he was very arbitrarily. Kresna, a king of Dwarawati, told Semar to solve it. Semar told Gareng and Bagong to go to Ngrancang Kencana palace to meet Prabu Wel Keduwelbeh.

In Ngrancang Kencana palace, Gareng, Bagong, and Petruk were fighting. They were fighting until they were sweaty. Gareng and Bagong recognized Prabu Wel Keduwelbeh as Petruk by smelling his sweat. Then, they stopped fighting because Petruk was their brother.

They didn’t fight anymore instead they were dancing together. Petruk realized that Gareng and Bagong knew him. Then he ran, but it was late, Gareng and Bagong caught him. Prabu Wel Keduwelbeh became Petruk again. Petruk told that he did it because he wanted to make a king aware. “As a king, he has to pay attention with his people”, he said. Petruk realized that his attitude wasn’t good. He apologized to Pandawa. The kingdom became peaceful again.

RECOUNT ----> A FRIGHTENING NIGHT

Ten years ago, on Sunday, there was riot in my town, Pringsewu. The atmosphere was too cold, although it wasn’t raining. I couldn’t breathe well at that time and my heartbeat ran so fast. I didn’t know what happened with me. I could guess that something bad would happen at that night. Actually, I didn’t know what was a terrific incident would happen. I felt that it would be a frightening night for me.

After I had dinner at seven o’clock, I watched television with my family. The film was so exciting therefore I didn’t want to go sleep early, whereas tomorrow was Monday and I should go to school early for ceremony. My parents told me to go bed, but I said no to them. Then my father persuaded me, he promised that he wanted to tell a fairy tale. I agreed and I went to bed. His story made me slept.

Suddenly, my mother woke me up when I was sleeping. Then I got up and I looked at my watch. Oh My God, it was still midnight, twelve o’clock. So, I was back to my bed again and I wanted to sleep but my mother forbade me. I didn’t know what the reasons. My mother said that we had to save our self. I was so confused. I couldn’t forget it. My mother held my hands and I felt her hands were very cold and trembled. I knew that she was very afraid. She told that it was danger. There were people who wanted to burn our home. In this case, police was the aim. We also included as an object because we lived in a police’s boarding house. My mother worked at police station as a secretary. So, that was why we also the aim and should save our self. I could see her eyes, she was afraid. She told me to wake my brother up. She didn’t want to lose her children. I could feel that she really loved her children. While I was waking my brother up, my mother prepared to evacuate. She saved all documents, such as birth certificate and diploma.

My father went out to find a hideout for us. One hour later, my father came back. He had found a hideout. The hideout was in my neighbour’s house, it wasn’t too far from my house. Then we went to there and hided at there. There were many people who also hided with my family. We turned off all lamps intentionally and always be ready for a critical situation. No one could sleep, we were afraid because we didn’t know what would happen in that situation. I heard a voice, it was so hard and rough, then I went to the window and I looked outside, I saw a police truck. There were so crowded people. They were policemen, called BRIMOB. They made a row, like a bodyguard, they kept us. I felt better and safety so I slept.

I woke up at 9 o’clock. I didn’t go to school because it. Nothing happened last night. I was very happy about it. The condition was really safe so my family and I went back home. We also brought all things that we had evacuated. We arranged it properly at our home.

Finally, a frightening incident didn’t happen. It was just a rumour. There was no victim. Although it was no a terrific incident, it made a frightening situation and unstable condition in my town. It happened for a week. All people couldn’t sleep well for a week. I felt traumatic and I didn’t want to hear a rumour again. It was frightening. We were fortunate because a terrific incident didn’t happen.

EARTH

A. Why is the matter?

The first think that I know about Earth is its shape, round. Round, it means that there is no end. In the round you can’t find the side, you can’t know where are the first and last lines. You just find that round is symbol of the endless. How about the earth? Does it have no end like its shape? If the answer is ‘yes’, maybe everyone in the world is happy to know it. Unfortunately, the earth isn’t eternal as we wish.

Now, sun is 5 billion years old and it is a half of its age. There is a research about sun that sun will become a big red star then change into ‘planetari nebula’ next 5 billion years. Sun is a prime energy for all people in earth. We can live because there is a sun which always gives us a shine which makes a lot of trees can live and so do we. Then what will happen if sun doesn’t exist again? Our earth will be broken or maybe missed. There is no life in earth. No humans, animals, and no life. What a terrific condition it is!

So, Earth will be broken in the next 5 billion years because the sun doesn’t exist. Do you agree with the statement? I don’t agree. Maybe next 1 million years again earth will be broken. Why? It’s because the manner of human itself. We know that there is much destruction which has happened in our earth. The primary issue is about the climate change. There are a lot of incidents which has happened in the earth, such as tundra melts in Alsaka, an island in Pasific from the part of Tuvalu country is sunk, the barren area are increased in Mongolia, ice layer in Peru is lost, and there are flood and storm in China which make erosion.

B. The problem

What will happen again next time? There are many possibilities. The main problem is the climate change in earth. Now, the climate has changed so make a global warming in the earth. Since 1900, the temperature of earth has increased 0.7 C. We can see there is much destruction which happens because of it. The climate changes more quickly than before. It is caused by people who don’t want aware of earth. Our economy and industry has advanced than before, but people forget to think the effect of the revolution itself, especially the effect of revolution industry.

Since the revolution industry happens, there are many incidents in our earth which make the destruction. It happens because many people don’t want aware of the revolution industry effect, whereas it makes a greenhouse. How can earth exist longer if we are as the inhabitants don’t want aware about it? All people just want to find profit for itself without aware of the effect that will happen in the next time.

There are many vehicles which are used. It makes the emission gas in earth increased then will make the temperature increased also. Trees are the answer to make the emission gas in earth lower. However, trees will produce oxygen and it can absorb the carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is one of the elements which make the temperature in earth increased. So, if there are a lot of trees in our earth, it can make the temperature of earth stable. Then we can save the earth from the damaged. Unfortunately, the facts make us disappointed. You can see now, how many trees in the forest now? The trees in the forest decrease so quick, it is because humans itself who don’t want aware about it. The deforestation happens everywhere, it makes the destruction, included for our earth. It cuts back the age of earth. However, Earth is our place to live. If the earth is broken, what will we do? Where will we live? How about our descendants? The problem of the earth is our problem also and it is a big problem for all people in the world who live in earth.

C. The explanation why I concern about earth

There is just one reason why I concern about earth. It is because I’m very apprehensive about the condition of earth in the future. What will happen in earth next time if there are only a few people who concern about it? All people have to realize that earth is our home. We must keep it because all people in the world need earth. They also must realize what we have done now. It will be a cause in the future. Everyone doesn’t want to look their descendants extinct. So, it’s good for us to save earth, not only for us but for our descendants.

Mark Lynas is the author who has written a book, “Hide Tide : The Truth about Our Climate Crisis”. In his book, he explains that if the temperature of the earth is increased, the climate change happens so it can be disasters. He explains about what will happen in the future if the temperature increases.

1. Upsurge 1 C, Arctic will lose the ice in a half year. It will make a terrific storm in South Atlantic and drought in USA.

1. Upsurge 2 C, the ice layer in the Greenland is missed and the surface of the sea is increased 7 meters. Pole bears must do hard to live when the ice layer is missed.

2. Upsurge 3 C, the forest in Amazon will be drought. In Europe, the summer will be very hot than before and then the people from sub tropic area will move to the area which is located near the equator.

3. Upsurge 4 C, the part of Antartic will sink and the temperature in London is 45 in the summer.

4. Upsurge 5 C, the ice in the both poles has melted. The existence near shore will be died.

5. Upsurge 6 C, this is the end of the civilization of humans, 95 % the existence of all creatures will be extinct.

That’s why I concern about the earth. Now, the level of carbon dioxide in the earth is 380 ppm. It means that the upsurge temperature of the earth is between 1 C and 2 C. So, our duty is to make it lower by decrease the carbon dioxide such as, be economical when we use energy, don’t cut the trees but we must plant many trees.
